Lots of people are getting their invites to Yahoo’s new “Meme” and many are already calling it an inevitable twitter killer. Some of the initial buzz I’ve been hearing is that Meme is very similar to Twitter but with more features, a better interface, and the ability to embed video in “memes”, which would be the equivalent to “Tweets”
You can check out meme here.
So is this the real deal Twitter Killer? I think it definitely has potential, except I do have one beef with the way Yahoo! launches new ventures. The fact that they always put their social sites as sub-domains is detrimental in my opinion. It comes off as too corporate, the domains are too long, and the branding for the sub companies is not nearly as strong as they try to make it.
A simple “powered by Yahoo” logo would maintain the initial trust and authority they try to put on users while still allowing for a separate, easily branded and short domain where something can easily grow to the size of Twitter by word of mouth. You had it right many years ago – everyone remembers “Yahoo”, but how many people really talk about shine.yahoo.com? (or whatever it is.)
