Take That Facebook!
With the anticipation of Myspace’s new design and features, many of the top social media commentators have wondered if it will rival facebook in the one area facebook has dominated them - usability. Everyone knows Rupert Murdoch is no slouch and that he would not let Facebook catch up to him without a fight. What did Myspace do? Like one of my favorite long time authors Tony Robbins says “They took massive action”.
Myspace is the king of social networks, the biggest, the most recognized, but the one thing they lacked was a clean design. In my opinion this has been partially fixed now. In fact, when you login now it really looks a lot like Facebook.
And what’s that new feature you say? “Friend’s Updates”. Yes, Facebook’s famous feature ripped. Well I guess that’s just how it goes in the wild wild west.
Here are a few key points about Myspace’s new design.
* More Web 2.0, rounded corners, sleek design
* Much more user-friendly
* Feed of updated “Friend’s Status”, very similar to Facebook’s friend status feature
* New navigation with smaller links and new icons for each link - very easy to browse
Time will tell what the user reaction will be to the design switch. In my opinion, it will be very positive all around. Individuals can still design their profiles as they please, but the actual site is much cleaner and more organized. Myspace also seems to be really pushing their profile editor, in two huge banners on the homepage. At last check the editor was down. One great idea Myspace uses that is smart for any large site that has repeat visitors - they allow the user to go back to the old template, what they are “used to” anytime they want. Having situations where “everybody wins” will always help maintain your loyal users.
